Introducing the 1-Day Workweek

Writer: Coltin RatcliffColtin Ratcliff

The traditional 5-day workweek has long been the norm—but here at Premium Lawns, unpredictable weather has forced a change in how we work. With the cold, snowy, rainy, and downright nasty conditions we’ve experienced this season, I’ve had to embrace what I call the 1-Day Workweek. When Mother Nature only gives you one ideal day for spraying, you make that day count!

Weather Woes & Scheduling Challenges

Normally, I’d be out there five days a week ensuring every lawn gets the care it deserves. But this winter’s wild weather has meant that there’s sometimes just one day a week that’s truly suitable for applying treatments. It’s not ideal, but it’s the reality of working in a market where every season brings its own challenges. Even with these setbacks, I’m determined to meet the deadline for applying our spring pre-emergent before the end of March.

Weather, Water, & Pre-Emergent Timing

The goal is simple: stop crabgrass before it even has a chance to get going. Crabgrass starts germinating when the soil temperature consistently hits around 55°F for several nights. With warmer days on the horizon, I’m working hard to apply a quality pre-emergent treatment—using StoneWall at a solid rate—to keep those unwanted weeds at bay. Even though recent snowfall provided minimal moisture (and no, that doesn’t count as deep watering!), the focus remains on timing this treatment just right so your lawn is fully protected.

Economic Realities & Overcoming Obstacles

As a business owner, I face plenty of challenges—from fluctuating weather patterns to the pressures of an ever-changing economy and business regulations. Every day lost to uncooperative weather means increased overhead and no income generated. Still, I remain optimistic. I’m convinced that when the sun finally comes out, all those long days spent prepping and waiting will pay off. I can’t wait to see that truck loaded with StoneWall pre-emergent hitting the road, ready to transform your lawn into a weed-free, healthy green space.

Why It Matters

This pre-emergent treatment isn’t just a seasonal task—it’s the cornerstone of a successful weed-control strategy. Along with StoneWall, I mix in two additional herbicides with both pre- and post-emergent properties to tackle spring weeds like dandelions, chickweed, annual bluegrass, and henbit. This early spring mix is arguably the most crucial treatment of the season, ensuring that your lawn stays pristine and ready for the warmer months.

What’s Up with This Pre-Emergent Herbicide?

Spring’s almost here—or at least, that’s what the calendar says, even if it still feels like winter out there. I’ve been spraying for four years now, and in that time, I’ve only ever used the best products available to keep your lawn looking its best. At Premium Lawns, we rely on top-notch products like StoneWall for solid crabgrass control.

How It Works

Pre-emergent herbicides work by forming a protective barrier in your soil. Once watered in, they bind to the top layer and stay active for several months. When weed seeds like crabgrass begin to germinate—typically when the 4-inch soil temperature reaches around 54–55°F for a few nights—the herbicide stops them in their tracks. That’s why getting your treatment in by late March is so crucial.

Why We Love StoneWall

Since I started spraying, I’ve seen firsthand how effective StoneWall can be. Applied at the proper rate and thoroughly watered in, this product provides up to 8 months of robust crabgrass control. Unlike older products that required multiple treatments, one solid application of StoneWall is all it takes to set your lawn up for success throughout the season.

Still Seeing Weeds?

No pre-emergent is foolproof. Heavy rains, extended wet conditions, or even some soil disturbance can break down the herbicide barrier faster than expected. Also, while pre-emergents excel at controlling crabgrass and other grassy weeds, they’re not as reliable on broadleaf invaders. That’s why you might need an extra liquid post-emergent treatment later in the season for those stubborn spots.

The Bottom Line

A quality pre-emergent treatment is the cornerstone of a thriving, green lawn. With careful scheduling—even on a 1-Day Workweek—and the power of products like StoneWall, you’re setting the stage for a lush, weed-free yard all season long. Thanks for trusting Premium Lawns with your outdoor space. Here’s to long days in the sun and a fantastic spring ahead!
