Fall Weed Control: Setting Your Lawn Up for Success Next Spring

2 min read

Today I want to talk about our Fall Weed Control Treatment. This treatment is what sets the stage for a lawn having very few, if any, weeds next spring.

On warm-season lawns, such as Bermuda and Zoysia, we apply a liquid application consisting of both a post-emergent herbicide and a pre-emergent herbicide. The post-emergent specifically targets dandelions and other broadleaf weeds that have already germinated this fall. The pre-emergent helps to prevent other broadleaf weeds from popping up between now and next spring.

We treat fescue lawns just a little bit differently. Fescue, which is considered a cool-season grass, needs to be fertilized this time of year, especially with newly emerging seedlings. In most cases, we apply a granular fertilizer, but occasionally we apply liquid fertilizer to the fescue areas of your lawn. We also carefully spot spray fescue with a post-emergent to take care of any existing broadleaf weeds. Since we are unable to apply a pre-emergent to newly seeded fescue in the fall, you can expect to have some broadleaf weeds in the spring. However, with our Round 1 treatment next spring, we will be able to address those weeds.

Regardless of the type of grass you have, you will want to water this application in with about ½ an inch of moisture within a few days, following the watering instructions provided for your treatment. This time of year, you should be able to cut back on your irrigation (unless you still have seed germinating), but it would be a good idea not to totally stop watering. Even though the temperatures are not as hot and the grass isn't growing as much, the root system of your lawn and your ornamentals still need moisture.

At this point in the season, we are getting close to being able to put the mowers away as well (everyone cheers). On your warm-season lawns, such as Bermuda and Zoysia, you will want to pay special attention to your mowing height and make sure not to mow it too short going into winter. The proper height will depend on your grass type and mowing conditions. Mowing too short can make your turf more susceptible to damage, especially if we have a have a harsh winter .
